As a mom of two who barely finds time to water my own garden (let alone keep up with secrets buried in one), I didn’t expect The Garden Girls to pull me in so fast. But WOW did it ever. With a dark small-town setting and layered female characters, this book felt like a chilling game of telephone between the past and the present. It was gritty, gripping, and full of, “wait, WHAT?” moments that kept me flipping pages way past bedtime.

“Sin has a way of flowering in the dark.”

What I Loved

I loved the Southern Gothic undertones paired with a crime procedural. The dual timeline was done brilliantly; jumping between the current investigation and a twisted past involving a cult-like girls’ home. Jessica R. Patch doesn’t shy away from tough topics. She handles trauma and psychological manipulation with both grit and care. The sisterhood element added emotional weight to the story, and I was invested in every single reveal. The pacing was tight, and the tension? Immaculate.

“They called it a home, but it felt more like a prison. One where roses bloomed but the truth withered.”

What I Didn’t Love

There were a few scenes that leaned too heavy on exposition. I also found myself needing to reread some parts to make sure I followed the timeline correctly. A few side characters needed more development, especially considering the impact they had on the twists. But overall, those were minor bumps in an otherwise compelling ride.

“What we bury always finds a way to bloom.”

Final Thoughts

This novel digs into abuse of power, religious trauma, generational secrets, and the resilience of women. It also explores how shame and silence can be weaponized, and how healing often comes with facing out darkest roots. It’s haunting, yes, but there’s also a quiet strength to it that I didn’t expect.

Who Will Love This Book?

  • Fans of dark thrillers with a Southern Gothic vibe
  • Readers who enjoy dual timelines with emotional depth and crime elements
  • Anyone who appreciates complex female characters and cult-related mysteries

The Garden Girls surprised me in the best way. It’s gritty, gripping, and emotionally layered with a mystery that blossoms slowly but powerfully. If you’re looking for a thriller that’s as emotionally resonant as it is suspenseful, this one’s worth adding to your TBR.
