Written in Red The Others Series Book 1 by Anne Bishop

I’ll admit it: I picked up Written in Red after hearing it’s a must-read for fans of urban fantasy, and I was NOT disappointed. Between my second cup of coffee and an afternoon curled up on the couch, I devoured this book faster than I thought possible. This story, with its eerie world-building and complex characters, felt like stepping into a dark fairytale – but one where the villains might just eat you.

“The Others were not bound by human laws or human morality. They were what they were, and humans lived because they allowed it.”

What I Loved

Anne Bishop crafts an intricate, atmospheric world where humans live on the fringes of society, overshadowed by powerful and mysterious creatures know as The Others. The protagonist, Meg Corbyn, is an endearing mix of vulnerability and bravery as a blood prophet seeking safety. The relationships she builds – especially with Simon Wolfgard – are beautifully layered. And the Lakeside Courtyard? It’s a setting so alive, I could practically feel the chill of the snow under my feet.

“Blood prophets could only see snippets of the future when their skin was cut. But for Meg, the truth ran deeper.”

What I Didn’t Love

While I adored the story, the pacing felt uneven in parts, with a few scenes dragging while others sped by. Additionally, the vast cast of characters could be overwhelming at times, making it tricky to keep track of everyone.

“Sometimes kindness could be as terrifying as cruelty.”

Final Thoughts

This book explores themes of survival, trust, and the tension between humans and the natural world. Meg’s journey highlights the importance of courage in the face of oppression, and the nuances of power dynamics keep the story compelling. It’s also a reminder of the bonds we form with people – or beings – who see us for who we truly are.

This book is for:

  • Fans of urban fantasy with dark, imaginative worlds
  • Readers who love character-driven plots with a mix of suspense and heart
  • Anyone who enjoys stories about unlikely friendships and found families

With its compelling world-building, memorable characters, and a storyline that balances tension and warmth, Written in Red is a must-read for urban fantasy enthusiasts. While it’s not without its flaws, it’s a book that will stick with you long after the last page.

I’m giving it 4.5 / 5 stars!
