There’s something magical about old, creaky houses with stories steeped in history. Maybe it’s my Capricorn Sun speaking, but I love uncovering secrets hidden in the past.

When I heard about A Lullaby for Witches by Hester Fox, I couldn’t resist diving into this haunting tale of love, loss, and lingering spirits. Pairing it with my morning coffee ritual was just the icing on the cake.

“The house knew her, called to her, as if it had been waiting for this moment.”

What I Loved

Margaret’s character was easily the highlight of the book for me. Her defiance against societal norms and her mysterious powers resonated with my Aries Moon – bold, emotional, and unapologetically herself.

The dual timelines were masterfully handled, and Hester Fox’s descriptive prose transported me to the foggy New England setting. The Gothic vibes reminded me of my favorite Taylor Swift Evermore tracks – eerie yet deeply emotional.

“In the quiet, she could almost hear Margaret’s voice, soft and haunting as a lullaby.”

What I Didn’t Love

While the atmosphere and historical storyline shone, Augusta’s modern-day narrative occasionally felt slow and repetitive. Some of her decisions left me frustrated (looking at you, Aries Moon impulsivity).

I also wished there was more depth to the supernatural elements – they had so much potential but felt underexplored at times.

“Magic isn’t about power; it’s about connection – to the Earth, to others, and to yourself.”

Final Thoughts

The novel explores themes of identity, loneliness, and the resilience of women through time. As someone who’s a Pisces Rising, I adored the emotional depth and connections between Margaret’s lift and Augsta’s journey. The message about embracing your own power and uniqueness is one I’ll carry with me.

This book is for:

Hester Fox has once again crafted a spellbinding tale that’s perfect for curling up on a gloomy day. Despite a few pacing issues, A Lullaby for Witches delivers and enchanting story filled with Gothic charm, witchy vibes, and emotional depth.

A solid 4/5 stars for this read!
