Welcome back to the world of The Naturals! Today, I’m diving into Killer Instincts by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. This is the second book in her addictive YA Thriller series. This Killer Instinct book review will be spoiler-free, so don’t worry if you’re just getting started with the series. If you loved the criminal profiling vibes of Criminal Minds but wished it came with sharp YA banter and found family dynamics, this is absolutely your jam.
“Sometimes the only way to catch a killer is to think like one.”
What I Loved
The psychology in this book hooked me right away. Jennifer Lynn Barnes does such a good job digging into how the human mind works. Both the dark and resilient sides. The pacing kept me flying through chapters (Capricorn me loves efficiency, and this was a zero-skippable-pages type of read). I also adored the character dynamics. As an eldest daughter, I felt every ounce of that protective, “must hold it all together” energy one of the characters carried. And of course, the slow-burn tensions had me in full Swiftie mode. Very …Ready For It? energy.
“You can’t outrun your past, but you can face it head-on.”
What I Didn’t Love
There were a few moments where the characters made choices that had me side-eyeing them. Like, millennial me was muttering “therapy, babes – let’s try therapy.” Also some of the setup leaned a little on what we already knew from book one. Still, those were minor hiccups in an otherwise super engaging ride.
“Every instinct you ignore becomes another risk you take.”
Final Thoughts
Killer Instinct isn’t just about solving crimes. It’s about what it means to carry the weight of knowledge. What it means to trust (or mistrust) your own instincts. And to find belonging even when the world feels dangerous. It asks how much of our past defines us, and how much we can choose to break free from it. Reading it felt like the book equivalent of a thriller playlist. Intense, high stakes, but with surprising moments of vulnerability woven through.
Who Will Love This Book?
- Fans of YA thrillers and twisty, fast-paced mysteries
- Readers who enjoy Criminal Minds or psychological crime shows
- Anyone who loves found-family vibes with a side of danger
My spoiler-free verdict? Killer Instinct is a worthy sequel that raises the stakes, digs deeper into its characters, and delivers a gripping mystery.
For me, it’s a sold 4 star read!
Sharp, thrilling, and the type of book that keeps you flipping pages late at night. If you’re not already on board with The Naturals series, you should be.
