Some books feel like an indulgence, and Throne of the Fallen by Kerri Maniscalco is exactly that. The allure of dark romance intertwined with fantastical elements makes this one of those reads that feels like diving into pure escapism. When I picked this up, I thought about how much I enjoy a story where the lines between good and evil blur – a classic Capricorn move, right? This book delivered a rollercoaster of emotions, leaving me savoring every twist and turn.
“You think you know darkness, but I am the abyss.”
What I Loved
Maniscalco’s ability to craft tension is unparalleled. From the sizzling chemistry between the leads to the Gothic setting, this book had me hooked. I especially loved how she took the trope of the morally ambiguous antihero and made him impossible to resist. The banter, the depth of the characters’ backstories, and the lavish world-building created a perfect storm of drama and romance. It was everything I look for in a dark fantasy romance.
“Even monsters have hearts – they just beat differently.”
What I Didn’t Love
As much as I loved the romantic tension, there were moments when the pacing dragged. Some scenes felt overly descriptive, taking away from the plot’s momentum. Additionally, the resolution felt a bit rushed, leaving a few questions unanswered. That said, it didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment.
“In the game of love and power, only fools play fair.”
Final Thoughts
At its heart, Throne of the Fallen explores themes of redemption, trust, and the complexities of love in the face of darkness. It reminds readers that love doesn’t always come in a perfect package. Sometimes, it’s messy, raw, and transformative. The story also dives into the idea of power and control, asking readers to consider the cost of both.
This book is for:
- Fans of morally gray heroes who make your heart race
- Readers who enjoy a dark and seductive romance with Gothic vibes
- Anyone who loves atmospheric world-building and sizzling tension
Throne of the Fallen was an intoxicating read, blending romance and fantasy in a way that only Kerri Maniscalco can. While it wasn’t perfect; it was an unforgettable escape into a lush, dangerous world. If you’re a fan of dark romance, this one deserves a spot on your shelf.
It’s 4.5 / 5 stars for me!
